Week 3 of Interviews with Natural hair blogger. For this week we are interviewing @healthyafrohair
Quick introduction
Hi, my name is Julie and I’m a Hair Blogger, Author and Influencer known as @healthyafrohair , who provides useful hair care tips and tutorials, to help others on their healthy hair journeys.
What is your hair type? It’s a combination of both 4b/c
How long have you been a natural for? It’s been 3 years & 5 months.
How do you feel about shrinkage? Well, it can be a little frustrating when you want a stretched out look but don’t quite get it. But at the same time, it’s a sign of healthy hair so I can’t complain too much.
What do you love most about your natural hair? I love that it’s completely unique to me, I love the volume & thickness and the versatility of styles I can create.
What does your hair wash day routine look like? How long does it last? Well, it can sometimes be a bit of a drawn out process, because I have to detangle prior to washing (which can sometimes take hours). But after that, I’ll wash, deep condition, moisturise and then twist my hair for styling the next day. But overall, it can take roughly 3-5 hours.
Do you Pre-Poo your hair? If yes or no why? Yes, I like to pre-poo (especially when using a clarifying shampoo) to help protect my hair from being stripped of oils and moisture.
When was the last time you visited a hair salon? It was July 2019. I was going away and got box braids done.
What is your favourite hair oil? My current Ayurvedic herb mix. It has some Bhringraj, Brahmi, Grapeseed oil, Almond Oil, peppermint oil, to name a few.
Have you ever coloured your hair before? If yes what did you use? Yes, it was many years ago when I was in my teens. It was a permanent hair dye (can’t remember the brand) but it was a copper colour which my sister did for me.
When was the last time you trimmed your hair? Do you trim your hair yourself or someone else? My last trim was about a year ago, so it’s overdue and yes, I do it myself.
What are your favourite hair products? ORS Replenishing Conditioner, Aunt Jackie’s Instant Detangling Therapy, my DIY Shea Butter Cream, Twisted Sista Edge Control and AS I AM Smoothing Gel.
Do you have any hair disaster stories you would like to share? Well it’s not quite a disaster, but was close to being one. So I was experimenting with a Ayurvedic herbal mask (for the first time) and left it on my hair for the recommended time of 2 hours. After washing it all out, I tried to detangle my hair, but the comb wouldn’t glide through my strands. I soon realised that my entire hair was matted and so I spent hours upon hours, trying to detangle my hair and was worried I’d have to do a 2nd big chop. Thankfully though, I managed to detangle it all.
Hair tips that have been helpful for you? Well, since becoming natural just over 3 years ago, I’d say that learning and understanding the characteristics of my hair; such as hair porosity, hair density and hair texture has been useful to know, especially when it comes to choosing products for my natural hair.
What are your hair goals? To have healthy hair that continues to thrive and to retain length.
What is your go to hairstyle? A High puff or Twist out.
Advice for new naturals To learn as much as you can about your hair, do lots of research, experiment with products until you find what works best for your hair and to remain consistent with your hair care routine.
